Vipassana meditation in Bali

Bali is known for many name, Island of peace, morning of the world, island of gods, all of these nicknames tell us about peace and spiritual, until nowadays these 2 thing still growing strong in Bali. Meditation is one of many spiritual activities that commonly practiced here in Bali, by Balinese, expatriate or tourist.

Among many technique practiced here in Bali, Vipassana is on of them that famous among many people. Vipassana is based on the Buddha teaching. Vipassana in the Buddhist tradition means insight into the true nature of reality, Vipassana meditation reintroduced by Ledi Sayadaw and Mogok Sayadaw, and popularized by Mahasi Sayadaw and S.N Goenka in which mindfulness of breathing and of thoughts, feelings and actions are being used to gain insight in the true nature of reality. Both Mahasi Sayadaw Vipassana meditation technique and S.N Goenka retreat is held in Bali regularly every year.

Most Vipassana practice is in 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 10 days and more. But if you a beginner and its your first time, i really suggest go with 10 days, because in the short day practice, 3 days for example in the first day usually you will still feel anxiety, because your mind still thinking about home and things that was happend before you come, in the second day you maybe start to feel calm, but in the third day usually the anxiety will arise again, because you start to thinking about home again, its the last day, you will thinking about what you want to do next, so the result will be very small.

In the 10 days retreat, the first 3 days is the hardest, this 3 days will determining whether you will continue to the finish or giving up. Then start from the fourth day usually participant will start to reap, but it will vary for every participant, continue from the fourth day, until the eighth usually anxiety will arise again, because thinking the retreat will end in 2 days :)

The rules in each Vipassana retreat is vary, but generally it as below :
1. To abstain from killing any being, stealing, sexual activitiy, telling lies, intoxicants, sensual entertainment and bodily decorations.
2. Other techniques, rites, and form of worship is discontinued
3. Noble silence - means silence of the body, speech and mind + no phone
4. Separation of men and women
5. Physical contact
6. No music, reading and writing

Sometime i heard or read on blogs about people that come to Bali to get peace, out of daily routine, broken heart, sadness, stress, and many other reason. Sometimes, a new friends will help, a relax time at the beach, alone time, this thing could help, but if you try Vipassana meditation it will help more, because in Vipassana we will understand about our mind, about our feeling, how it arise and how it passes away, by experience. With this knowledge we will not drag by our feeling.

Because the knowledge we gain in Vipassana retret is by experience, so we will always remember. Usually after the 10 days retreat, you will realize there is something different, when you angry or sad or happy, you will realize it arise and can decide weather you want to follow it or now :)

How to Enjoy Bali Island in 1 Week

Bali is an island and province in Indonesia, Bali is the largest tourist destination in the country, known for its highly developed arts, nature, spiritual and cozy atmosphere. Bali is part of the coral triangle, area with highest biodiversity of marine species. In this area alone over 500 reef building coral species can be found, 7 times then Carribean.

Of the various things mentioned above, tourist can choose a variety of activities to do in their leisure, such as diving, mountain biking, snorkling, swimming, visiting places, sea walking, dining on cruise ship, shopping, rafting and many more. It takes time, to get to know Bali.

So here i try to give suggestion how to spend 1 week in Bali. and to know Bali in general.

First day - Arrive, 1 day in Sanur
Sanur is about 30 minute from Ngurah Rai International Airport, it famous for the sunrise. Many visitor local or international will come in the morning around 5 AM, just to enjoy the sunrise, Sanur's tranquil atmosphere also adds sense of peace to every one. A great place to relax and rest from jetlag.

todo : Enjoy sunrise, Biking, Le Meyeur Museum, Watersport

Second - 2 day in Ubud
After having a great relax and rest in Sanur, its time to move to north up to Ubud. Located amongst rice paddies and steep ravines in the central foothills of Gianyar regency, Bali. The town was originally important as a source of medicinal herbs and plants, Ubud gets its name from the Balinese word ubad (medicine).

There is an aura of calm that surrounds Ubud, with rice field all around, river and the nice friendly people, all of that makes Ubud so peacefull.

todo : Bali bird & reptile park, Blanco renaissance museum, Taro elephant park, Campuhan ridge walk

Third day -
Second day in Ubud, its time to workout a little, while enjoying the view in the day and rest in the afternoon.

todo : White water rafting / Cycling, Ubud palace, Museum puri lukisan, spa massage

Fourth day - 2 day in Singaraja
Now in the fourth day, time to go to top north of Bali. Singaraja is a small city compared to Denpasar, the beach has black sand. Singaraja was the Dutch colonial administrative center in Bali and the Lesser Sunda Islands from 1849 until 1953, Singaraja was also an administrative center for Japanese during the World War II occupation.

On the city, there is not many tourist attraction can be found. But on the way there from Ubud, there is several interesting places specially around Bratan lake. In the afternoon prepare your swimsuit to swim at Banjar Hot Spring.

todo : Candi Kuning, Danau Bratan, Brahma Vihara Arama, Banjar Hot Spring

Fifth day -
Get ready to wake up early, there is one must visit tourist attraction in Singaraja, it is to go see dolphin by traditional boat. The sunrise view in the background and dolphin swimming around, its an amazing view. Next on the way back to Denpasar, diving is the best thing to do.

todo : Dolphin tour, Diving in Menjangan or Candi Dasa

Sixth - 2 day in Kuta, Leaving
Kuta is now the center of an extensive tourist-oriented urban area that merges into the neighboring towns. Legian to the north, is the commercial hub of Kuta and the site of many restaurant and entertainment spots. Most of the area's big beachfront hotels are in the southern section of Tuban.

todo : Waterboom park, Padang Padang beach, Dinner at Jimbaran

Seventh -
On this last day, time to relax and prepare your self for the flight. But if you still have time, maybe one last Balinese spa massage?

todo : Spa massage

So here is 1 week trip plan (7 days) just to have a general feel of Bali. But actually there is still many area to visit, including a trip to smaller island around Bali, but with this trip it will cover major tourism in Bali.

Pandawa beach, safe and peacefull

Pandawa beach is about 1 hour from Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport. Located in Kutuh village, Pandawa beach is one of many beach around Bukit, Jimbaran, alongside Dreamland, Balangan, Padang Padang and many other.

On high tide, we can found some great wave to surf, on low tide this beach is great for swimming and canoing. Around the beach we can easily found place to buy some food and shade, but there is not much villa or hotel near Pandawa beach because of its remote location.

Pandawa beach best to visit if you come with children, because on low tide the reef will create natural pool, free from wave and stream.

Below is a video and some photo taken in Pandawa beach
